Operation: Teach Elementary School Kids About Climate Change

Corps: Portland (High School)
Raven: Malaika

What were your goals for this Operation?
To give a presentation at a few different elementary schools to teach kids about climate change and what they can do to at their age to help the planet.

Describe your Operation.
I emailed a few different elementary schools and see if they would be willing to have me present. I put together an easy-to-follow presentation for them, filled with information about climate change, a few signature places that are being effected, and what they can do to help. I also asked if they had any question. That’s it!

What were some “Aha!” moments? (Things that happened throughout the course of planning or implementing the Operation that were surprising or noteworthy)
Kids know so much more than I realized! I was very impressed with what they already knew and how intrigued they were. I was afraid my presentation wouldn’t have enough interesting things about it, and I would loose the kids’ attention, but they all stayed very engaged and had lots of follow-up questions! It was so nice to see!

If you could share 3 pieces of advice with your past self about this Operation, what would they be?
Maybe to ask teachers what the kids have already learned because I could have added more complicated things to it but I underestimated how much they would know. That’s probably it though, the rest went really good!

What advice would you give to other activists who would like to plan a similar Operation?
Just go for it! I was really nervous to do this and thought schools wouldn’t agree to it, and it just wouldn’t end up working out. But it did! Schools, teachers, and students are way more interested in what you have to say than you would think.
